Privacy and the Diocese

Description

This article outlines privacy obligations for Synod and parishes.

Overview

The Synod has a Privacy Policy which explains how Synod Office handles personal information provided to it.

Parishes are not covered by the Privacy Act unless they are an organisation with an annual turnover of more than $3million. However, parishes should be mindful of community expectations about the sensitivity of personal information and may wish to adopt a policy that covers how the parish will handle the personal information that it holds about its members.

The Privacy Act gives the individual greater control over the way that their personal information is handled. The Privacy Act allows you to:

  • know why your personal information is being collected, how it will be used and who it will be disclosed to
  • ask for access to your personal information
  • ask for your incorrect personal information to be corrected
  • make a complaint, if you think they’ve mishandled your personal
