Area dean’s duty statement

This article describes the responsibilities of Area Deans in the Diocese of Adelaide. It covers their role inpastoral care, clergy support, deanery coordination, commissioning services, and the upkeep of clergy residences.

Pastoral care

Together with the archbishop, area deans help foster care among clergy and their families within the Deanery.

  • Visit: Visit each rectory family at least once a
  • Social: Organise at least one social gathering each year with clergy and their
  • Support: Provide phone or other support when clergy are
  • Facilitate: Lead discussions in the deanery about how to care for one another and develop a shared care strategy.
  • Communicate: Keep the Archbishop informed about issues affecting deanery clergy, theirfamilies, or parishes, especially those needing pastoral

Clergy vacancies and commissioning

  • Coordinate with the Archbishop to prepare ministry commissioning
  • Once a new appointment is announced, begin arranging the
  • Follow diocesan guidelines for commissioning:
  • Draft an order of service and submit it to the
  • Ensure all elements and participants are
  • Hold a rehearsal before the
  • Follow up by calling after the clergy’s first Sunday service and visiting the new family after a month.

Deanery meetings

Hold regular Area Deanery meetings, which should include:

  • Fellowship and social interaction
  • Prayer and worship
  • Study
  • Local and diocesan agenda items

Rectories and other clergy residences

  • Inspect clergy residences before a new clergy family moves
  • Encourage parishes to meet diocesan housing
  • Consider the special needs or requests of the incoming
  • Submit a report to the Registrar outlining required and completed
