Church registers and other records

Description

This article explains what records each church and parish must keep, how to store them safely, and who is responsible for filling them out during services.

Required church records

Records should be properly and safely maintained. Every church must keep the following:

  • Vestry record of services book
  • Baptismal register
  • Confirmation register
  • Marriage register
  • Burial register
  • Vestry meeting minute book

Each parish must also keep records of Parish Council meetings.

Storage and safety

These records should be stored in a secure, dry location—safe from fire, moisture, or theft. Avoid keeping them in a rectory or private home.

If you have older documents or registers that are no longer in use, contact the Diocesan Archivist for advice on long-term safekeeping: archives@adelaideanglicans.com.

When visiting clergy officiate

If a visiting clergy member performs a funeral, wedding, or any other pastoral service, the church wardens must make sure:

  • The correct register is available
  • The clergy member fills it in
