Clergy absence (arrange a locum tenens)

Description

This article explains how to arrange for a Locum Tenens during a clergy absence or parish interregnum.

Overview

The period between the resignation of an incumbent (parish priest, priest-in-charge or rector) and theappointment of a new one is called an interregnum. A clergyperson may be appointed to carry out ministry duties during this time. This role is called a locum tenens (locum). A locum may also be appointed if the current clergyperson is away for an extended period, such as during long service leave or illness.

The wardens are responsible for requesting the appointment of a locum. If they need help finding someone suitable, they may contact the regional archdeacon for assistance.

To nominate a locum, use the online form and request the archbishop to issue a licence. Thenominated clergy must not begin their ministry as locum tenens until the licence has been issued by the archbishop.
