Clergy long service leave

Description

This article explains how long service leave (LSL) works for clergy in the Diocese.

Overview

Clergy are entitled to long service leave, which is managed by the Anglican Long Service Leave Fund. This national scheme allows clergy to keep their LSL entitlements when moving between parishes or dioceses.

Summary

  • Clergy accrue 3 weeks of LSL for every year of service (1 week/year before 1 Jan 2015).
  • Leave can be taken after 10 years of
  • Applications must be submitted to the archbishop at least three months before the planned leave.
  • During LSL, clergy receive their usual stipend and allowances, plus a Supplementary Payment from the LSL Fund.
  • The parish or entity employing the clergy will receive a lump sum to help cover the cost of a locum.

Treasurers

The 2019 LSL cost is $1,560 per clergy person, billed monthly. Leave payments from the Fund go tothe Diocese, which then transfers the appropriate amounts to the parish and clergy.

Governance

LSL is governed nationally and administered by participating dioceses. The program is an agency of General Synod and follows the Long Service Leave Canon 2010.
