Description

This article provides guidance on food safety standards and training requirements for parishes and church groups.

Overview

A new national Food Safety Standard is now in place to ensure the safe handling and processing of food. Itexpands existing food safety requirements and introduces three food safety management tools for food services, caterers, and some retail operations.

Affected businesses, which include not-for-profits such as churches must have the new requirements in place by December 2023.

Food safety training

SA Health and most local Councils provide a link to free food handling training that parishes or individuals can promote and use in their parish activity.

There are two main online programs that can be accessed via your local Council website.

  1. DoFoodSafely: a free, non-accredited, online learning program provided by the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria and proudly supported by Queensland Health and South Australia Health.
  2. I’m Alert Food Safety: a free online course for food handlers, which includes a presentation and interactive A training acknowledgement form can be printed upon completion and be kept as a part of your staff records.
