Nominations committee

Description

This article explains the process for forming a Nomination Committee when there is a vacancy in the office of the parish priest.

Overview

When a parish priest’s role becomes vacant, a Nomination Committee may be established to assist the Archbishop and Archdeacon in finding and nominating a suitable candidate. In some cases, parisheswith a separate trust deed may follow an alternative arrangement.

The committee includes representatives from both the parish and the diocese. Churchwardens are exofficio members, and additional representatives are elected by the Parish Vestry.

  • Parishes with a single congregation may elect up to three representatives (in addition to the two wardens).
  • Parishes with multiple congregations should refer to Parochial Administration Ordinance Section 53(2)(f)(i).

Eligibility

Parish employees are not eligible for election. Only one person per household may serve on the committee (Parochial Administration Ordinance Section 53(2a)).

Bishop’s discretion

The bishop may appoint a minister without forming a Nomination Committee if the parish is considereda ‘parish in need of support’ (Parochial Administration Ordinance Sections 4 and 60(b)).
